Nagisa Yamada, a quiet middle school student living in a small rural town, resides with her brother Tomohiko, a hikikomori, and their mother, who works multiple jobs after their father's death. Nagisa aims to join the Self Defense Force to help support her family. A new transfer student, Mokuzu Umino, arrives at Nagisa's school. Known as the daughter of a famous singer and admired for her cute looks, Mokuzu quickly becomes popular among her classmates. However, she approaches Nagisa, the only one who seems unimpressed, claiming to be a mermaid. Mokuzu tells Nagisa that a storm is coming and asks for her friendship.
