Average college student Totonou Kunou is in the middle of his usual morning curry-making routine when police officers arrive at his door, asking about his whereabouts the previous night. It turns out one of his classmates has been found dead near his home, and the police bring Totonou to the station as the prime suspect for murder. Totonou claims he is innocent, saying he had no reason to harm the victim since they had no close relationship. But when a witness puts him at the crime scene, he ends up staying in custody longer than he expected. As he begins to interact more with the police department staff, they discover Totonou is no ordinary suspect. Though he is a bit difficult to deal with, he is extremely observant—able to deduce each officer's personal troubles from just a handful of clues. With evidence stacking up against him, Totonou must rely on his deductive skills to unravel the mystery behind his classmate's death, clear his name, and find out who is setting him up.

Mystery to Iu nakare was nominated for the 12th and 13th Manga Taisho Awards in 2019 and 2020, placing second and sixth in the final ranking, respectively. In 2019, the manga was nominated for the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category; it later won the 67th award in the same category in 2022. The series was also nominated for the 44th Kodansha Manga Award in the General category in 2020, and the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award in 2022. The manga ranked four consecutive times on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Female Readers division from 2019 to 2022. The series has been published in English as Don't Call It Mystery by Seven Seas Entertainment as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes since May 30, 2023. The manga has also been released in French by Noeve Grafx since May 13, 2021. Mystery to Iu nakare was adapted into a Japanese television drama that was broadcast on Fuji TV from January 10, 2022, to March 28, 2022. It was also adapted into a live-action film that premiered on September 15, 2023.
