Yuji Sakai, an ordinary high school student, learns from a mysterious girl that he actually died long ago and now exists as a "Torch"—a temporary substitute for people who have been erased from reality. These Torches assume the identities of the vanished but eventually fade away completely, along with any memory of them in the living world. Despite accepting the truth of his own death, Yuji befriends the girl and gives her the name "Shana," after the blade she carries. Shana vows to defend Yuji from the Denizens, supernatural beings who seek to exploit his rare, self-replenishing Torch to upset the world's equilibrium. In response, Yuji chooses to stand and fight alongside Shana against these threats.
