Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku

In "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse," Shinji Ikari yearns for excitement amidst the dull routine of his school life at NERV Foundation Academy. His desire is fulfilled when he witnesses a violent confrontation between two students and a winged figure. The students turn out to be his classmates, Rei Ayanami, whom he has a crush on, and the new transfer student Kaworu Nagisa. Unwittingly, Shinji triggers a force that appears to vanquish the winged individual, which later materializes as an EVA, a gun-like weapon that emerges from his innate survival instinct. He learns that the beings his peers fight against are known as Angels—ephemeral consciousnesses that inhabit human hosts due to their lack of physical form. Joining forces with Rei, Kaworu, and eventually the international student Asuka Langley Soryu, Shinji commits to defending his town from these Angel threats.

Background

A spin-off of the landmark anime Neon Genesis Evangelion that reimagines Shinji and his companions as vigilante students who spend their nights patrolling for zombie-like versions of the Angels from the original series. The plot remains mostly true to the source material. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse was published in English by Dark Horse from September 14, 2010 to July 5, 2011, and in a complete omnibus on April 26, 2016.
