GREEN BLOOD

The conclusion of the American Civil War ushered in an era of industrial growth in the United States, drawing immigrants from across the globe who sought to achieve their own American dream. However, the reality for most was poverty, prejudice, and despair. In Manhattan, New York, a flood of newcomers arrived through the harbors, and the Sixth Ward—known as Five Points—was regarded at that time as the worst slum on earth. Gangsters controlled every aspect of the district, even bribing the police; Five Points belonged to the mob, and the mob’s word was law. Yet even in Five Points, where robbery, prostitution, and murder seemed to be the only constants, faint glimmers of hope remained. Luke Burns, an honest and morally upright teenager, understood that the mob was responsible for the brutal conditions and that joining their ranks would never lead to the American dream. But his older brother, Brad Burns, had become an assassin for the Grave Diggers, the largest gang in Five Points—a secret he kept from Luke to shield him. Brad was known as the Grim Reaper, and his infamy as a merciless and highly skilled killer preceded him.
