Kaoru Nishimi, known for his intelligence and privileged background, has spent his entire life moving between schools, often perceived as an outsider. When he transfers to a high school in Kyushu for his freshman year, however, things start to change. He develops a friendship with the class president, Ritsuko Mukae, and unexpectedly connects with the notorious school troublemaker, Sentarou Kawabuchi. Despite Kaoru's reputation as a model student and Sentarou's frequent truancy and involvement in fights, they find common ground in their love for music. During a visit to Ritsuko's family-owned record shop, Kaoru stumbles upon Sentarou playing jazz drums in the basement. Though Kaoru, a classical pianist, has no experience with jazz, he is captivated by Sentarou's talent. This encounter sparks Kaoru’s interest in the genre, and the two start practicing together in the record shop's basement after school. Through his growing dedication to mastering jazz, Kaoru discovers a genuine friendship and the joy of creating music.

Sakamichi no Apollon won the 57th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category in 2011. The series was published in Polish by J.P. Fantastica from July 2, 2015, to April 20, 2017; and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones from September 29, 2015, to June 28, 2016.
