Despite his classmates' warnings, Kyon's curiosity gets the better of him and he tries to befriend Haruhi. As the eccentric girl gradually opens up to him, he discovers she is completely serious. One conversation between them sparks a dangerous idea in Haruhi's mind: because she finds the school's clubs boring, she should create her own. Thus, the SOS Brigade is formed, and Kyon is quickly swept into a life of absurdity. Taking over the Literary Club's room, Haruhi quickly recruits three new members: the stoic Yuki Nagato, the timid Mikuru Asahina, and the supposedly mysterious transfer student Itsuki Koizumi. With this group assembled, Haruhi drags the team on adventures in search of excitement and the supernatural, much to Kyon's dismay. However, he soon learns that there is more to these recruits than meets the eye—and that what Haruhi wishes for may be far closer than she realizes.

Suzumiya Haruhi Series ranked first in the 2005 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! for the Light Novels division. As of 2017, the series has sold over 20 million copies. The series has been published in English by Little, Brown and Company and Yen Press since April 1, 2009. Yen Press has rereleased the volumes under the Yen On imprint since September 4, 2012. It has also been released in Spanish by Editorial Ivrea since April 2010.
