At age 15, Shuugo "Sougorou Matsukawa" Azuma, the heir of the Tamano family—a prestigious kabuki lineage—is widely regarded as a gifted performer among his contemporaries. His inflated ego makes him dismissive of other actors his age, but that changes after he sees a performance by Junpei "Gensuke Arai" Noda, the successor of the Ootani family. Overwhelmed by Gensuke's skill, Sougorou resolves to hone his own craft and vows to one day surpass his rival. Two years later, Sougorou discovers that Gensuke is not only a classmate at his school but has also been monitoring his progress. Determined to outshine Gensuke, Sougorou pours everything into what should be his biggest role yet, only to receive a tepid reaction from the audience. At a loss for how to prove his superiority, Sougorou gets an unexpected chance—but to his frustration, he must partner with Gensuke to portray a married couple in an upcoming performance. Despite his reluctance, Sougorou accepts the opportunity, hoping it will finally put him in the spotlight. Forced to collaborate with his rival, he gradually finds that their time together might unexpectedly improve both his acting and their relationship.
