Vampire
バンパイヤ
Readers of Vampire often find themselves puzzled because the story initially appears to revolve around werewolves. It opens in a village inhabited by vampires who are abandoning their homes and venturing into the wider world as humans encroach on their valley. However, these vampires neither drink blood nor possess immortality. Instead, each can transform into an animal—ranging from wolves and bats to snakes and crocodiles—with the transformation triggered by different stimuli for each individual. For instance, the main vampire, Toppei, turns into a wolf whenever he sees the moon or becomes frightened. His younger brother Chippei shifts whenever he encounters anything round. Others transform upon smelling onions, catching sight of a telephone pole, or encountering various other triggers.

Background
Vampire marked a major turning point in Tezuka's life, at which he began to pay more attention to the darker side of the human psyche, characterized by darker, less heroic protagonists and more complicated villains.
