Faust
ファウスト
This work is a caricature of Goethe's Faust and captures the dreamy aesthetic of animation from that era. Confident in his might, the devil Mephist unleashes violent acts upon the world, including casting angels down to Earth. In response, God commands Mephist to condemn the scholar Faust to hell. At the same time as issuing that order, God has already granted new life to the fallen angel, who is reborn as Princess Margarete. Meanwhile, Faust feels a sense of futility in his scholarly pursuits, believing that no matter how diligently he studies, he will never achieve his aims. At that moment, the devil Mephisto appears before him. Faust rashly signs a contract promising to go to hell if Mephisto fulfills his desires. Using his magic, Mephisto transforms Faust into a young man. Faust then ventures into town, where he meets the beautiful Princess Margarete and falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Faust is compelled to accept the King—Margarete's father—who imposes an unreasonable demand: to find the most beautiful goddess in the world, known as Helen. Accompanied by Mephisto, Faust sets out for the Hartz Mountains, where devils are rumored to gather on Walpurgis Night.
