Ikoku Nikki

Thirty-five-year-old novelist Makio Koudai never had a good bond with her older sister Minori, who constantly scolded her for being different. As a result, Makio feels no deep sorrow when she learns that Minori and her husband died in a car accident. However, when Makio is called to identify their bodies, she encounters her fifteen-year-old niece, Asa Takumi, whom she has not seen in years. While Asa struggles to come to terms with her parents' death, Makio comforts her by saying her confusing emotions are normal and suggests the teenager keep a diary as a way to deal with the loss. After finding out that no other relatives were willing to take Asa in, Makio chooses to become her guardian, even though she has no experience raising a child. In an uncertain world, the novelist and the teenager must learn to coexist while discovering themselves.

Background

Ikoku Nikki was nominated for the Manga Taisho award in 2019 and 2020, placing fourth and tenth, respectively. In 2020, it ranked tenth on Kono Manga Sugoi!'s list for female readers. The series has been published in French by Kana since July 9, 2021; and in Italian by Flashbook since July 14, 2021. Ikoku Nikki was adapted into a live-action movie in 2024.
