Ryo believes she is an ordinary high school student living a typical life in modern Tokyo, but her reality is far from normal. During a school excursion, she is ambushed by a strange man who identifies himself as Benkei, the legendary warrior monk famous for collecting 999 swords during the Heinan period. He asserts that she is Ushiwakamura, the thousandth challenger destined to defeat him and become his master according to legend. However, this revelation is complicated by the fact that Ushiwakamura was historically a man, and both figures lived in feudal Japan during the 13th century, not in contemporary times.
