In "Twilight Out of Focus," Mao Tsuchiya and Hisashi Ootomo are roommates who established three rules in front of a camera: Mao will keep Hisashi's homosexuality and his relationship with another man a secret; Hisashi will not fall in love with or pursue Mao; and they will both respect each other's personal space. These agreements guide their life during their second year of living together. The balance of their arrangement is disrupted when Mao's film club asks Hisashi to star in an upcoming boys' love movie, where he would play a delinquent in a romance with the class president. Mao tries to talk Hisashi out of accepting the role because of their agreement, but Hisashi agrees without hesitation after the director convinces him. As Mao pictures Hisashi playing the delinquent character, he becomes increasingly aware of Hisashi's closeness. Even though he knows Hisashi is just a close friend and off-limits, Mao finds it hard to ignore the growing realization that his feelings for Hisashi may have developed beyond simple friendship.
