Takao Taniguchi suffers a fractured finger during a junior high school baseball game, which prevents him from continuing to play. Upon enrolling at Sumitani High School, he finds himself constantly observing the baseball club despite being unable to participate. The soccer club captain takes notice of him, and although Taniguchi still harbors hopes of joining the baseball club, he ultimately decides to try out for the soccer team instead. As a complete novice, he draws on the strong work ethic he developed in junior high, and his new teammates start recognizing his potential. Even as he dedicates himself to soccer, Taniguchi cannot shake his youthful passion for baseball and begins secretly serving as an umpire for baseball games.
