Set in an alternate version of Meiji-era Japan, a fourteen-year-old named Misono Kimiyori—whose once-wealthy noble family has fallen into financial hardship—takes up a job at the Imperial Palace to help pay off their debts. There, he meets the young female emperor, Akiko, and this encounter marks the beginning of a distinctive and fascinating connection between them.
