For some time now, God has been deceased, and the angels in heaven have resolved to seek a successor. Despite his reluctance, the angel Rain is selected as one of four candidates vying to become the next God. He and the other three candidates will descend to Earth for one year, undergoing a trial to assess their fitness for the role. Each candidate is allowed to reveal their true identity to one human on Earth. Thus, Shirou Natsume—a perfectly ordinary high school student who aspires to become a teacher—is chosen by the angel Rain as his confidant. The test: Rain and Shirou must raise a "baby" that possesses no thoughts or emotions of its own, nurturing it into a being as close to human as possible.
