The ruthless lord Daigo Kagemitsu bargains with 48 demons, trading away his newborn son's body parts in exchange for power. He then casts the mutilated infant into a river and soon forgets him, building a prosperous kingdom. Unbeknownst to Daigo, the child survives, endowed with heightened spiritual perception that lets him move through the world sightless, deaf, limbless, and voiceless. A gifted physician rescues the boy, raises him as his own, names him Hyakkimaru, and equips him with advanced prosthetics that enable him to walk and fight. But tragedy follows—Hyakkimaru becomes a magnet for demons, drawing them to the doctor's home, and the doctor is ultimately forced to send him out into the world. During his travels, Hyakkimaru discovers that slaying demons restores his missing body parts, and he resolves to kill enough to become whole. He soon crosses paths with Dororo—a boy who calls himself the greatest thief in the world—who reluctantly tags along with Hyakkimaru, hoping to one day get his hands on Hyakkimaru's sword. Together, the two journey across a countryside overrun by both demons and cruel humans, who may prove even worse than the monsters.
