Born into a ducal family, Sylph Biebel is expected to marry Prince Mikhail Luxborn and one day rule the kingdom. However, Sylph's true desire is to become a librarian—a position deemed impossible for a noble lady. Longing for the freedom that books give her, she frequently slips into the royal library disguised as a commoner. There, she meets Kanna Copierne, another avid reader who is secretly also a noble. Their bond stays strong even after each learns the other's true identity—until Sylph introduces Kanna to Mikhail. At that point, Kanna accuses Sylph of being a jealous bully who plots to kill her. As a result, Sylph is locked in a tiny cage and left near the neighboring Kingdom of Dagenhelm, meant to be eaten by its ruler, a man-eating monster. But Sylph is rescued by Faber, the actual king of Dagenhelm, who is in truth a young man fascinated by stories. As Faber grows fond of Sylph, even this girl unfairly cast as a villainess may still find her own happily ever after.
