After being talked into playing a simple fortune-telling game named "Persona," Naoya Toudou never foresaw that it would result in him summoning a young girl crying out for assistance. Her cries overpower Naoya's senses, causing him to regain consciousness in a bizarre space hovering between awareness and unawareness where an enigmatic being dwells. Identifying themselves as Philemon, they bestow upon him the power to use a "Persona"—a creature that serves as an "alternate self"—before he comes to in the school's clinic. Naoya's companions likewise recall encountering the same entity, but they pay it little attention as they set off for the hospital to visit their ill friend, Maki Sonomura. During their visit, Sonomura vanishes while in the middle of her operation, and the hospital's patients unexpectedly turn aggressive. Trapped, each member of the group calls forth their Persona, which repels the remaining attackers, astonishing them. Worried for their comrade, the group embarks on a search for Sonomura while gathering further details about the grim predicament they find themselves in.
