The year is 1440; nine years have elapsed since Jeanne d'Arc was executed in Rouen, and the Hundred Years' War is drawing to a close. Driven by greed, the French nobility rise up against King Charles VII, seeking to restore feudal authority and block his centralizing policies. Though they once stood together fighting the English, the nobles now turn on the crown, threatening to drag France back into a conflict it had just started to escape. Emily du May, the illegitimate daughter of a French duke, is taken in by Robert de Baudricourt and raised as "Emil"—presenting her as a man, just as he had done for Jeanne before. When Robert is summoned by Constable Richemont to combat the rebels, Emil confronts her foster father and insists on joining the French loyalists. Haunted by visions of Jeanne, Emil is determined to complete her predecessor's unfinished mission. As she tries to stop the rebel army led by Dauphin Louis, the power-hungry son of Charles VII, Emil will come face to face with the agents of rebellion and travel across the nation that Jeanne sought to unite.
