Inside a high school classroom, the students are grieving for one of their own: Tomie Kawakami, who has been killed and dismembered. Stunned by the news of her death, the class is bewildered by the cruel fate that has befallen someone so cherished—such a radiant and beautiful girl did not deserve such a horrible end. Yet, a strikingly familiar student suddenly appears at the doorway. Gorgeous, slim, and with a beauty mark under her left eye, Tomie smiles and says she's sorry for being late. But this is only the start of the mysteries surrounding this seemingly inhuman woman. Any man unfortunate enough to catch her attention instantly falls for her, yet also becomes consumed by a dark urge to cut her apart—an urge to which they often give in. And every time, Tomie returns from the dead to continue her favorite pastime: playing with men.

Background

Tomie was published in English by ComicsOne on April 4, 2005. VIZ Media republished the series in a single hardcover omnibus on December 20, 2016. The story Painter was also published by VIZ Media as part of Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories. The series was also released in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica in two volumes from February 1, 2015, to May 30, 2015; and in Spanish by ECC Ediciones from July 29, 2016, to August 31, 2016. The manga was adapted into multiple Japanese live-action films and an anthology TV series that aired on December 26, 1999.
