Jirou Tenge, the second son of a once-influential Japanese family, comes home after being held as a prisoner of war in an American camp during World War II. He discovers his family has been corrupted by the war's devastating social consequences. His older brother, desperate to preserve what remains of the family estate after the government's forced land redistribution, has offered his wife to their father in exchange for his approval, while other relatives have fallen into similar moral decay. Jirou himself is coerced into spying for the Americans, his will broken during captivity. Now the youngest daughter, Ayako, must carry the weight of her family's transgressions.
