Willem Kmetsch emerges from a frozen sleep as the sole survivor of the Emnetwiht, the human race that once populated the planet but perished five centuries ago at the hands of the "Beasts." He now resides on one of the few hundred floating islands that form what remains of civilization, alongside other species who all display animal characteristics like horns, fangs, wings, or scales. Because he lacks any such trait, Willem is known as a "markless." One day, Willem comes across another markless named Ctholly Nota Seniorious. He pays little attention to the encounter and carries on with his life, taking on various odd jobs. However, he later encounters her again after accepting a military assignment. Willem quickly discovers that the lively young Leprechauns he has been put in charge of are essential to the fight against the Beasts. These girls have known almost nothing outside of being treated as weapons, and they are ready to sacrifice themselves if it means defeating the enemy. Determined to give them a chance at a normal life, Willem takes on a fatherly role for the girls. Much like when he himself once went to war, he must now come to terms with watching these children head into battle.
