Yuuta Itou's mother, who has a terminal illness, requests that he record her final days, and he complies. He captures everything—from her joyful smile while spending time with family to the moments when sickness takes a toll on her in the hospital, accumulating hours of footage. After she dies, Yuuta edits her life into a film for a school screening, choosing to inject a bit of fantasy into the conclusion of his movie, Dead Explosion Mother, by literally blowing things up! Due to the backlash over what others see as an insensitive and inappropriate portrayal of his mother's death, Yuuta makes his way to the hospital rooftop with the intention of ending his life. However, he encounters a girl named Eri there. Fascinated by his movie, Eri asks Yuuta to create a new film that will surpass the first and silence his detractors. The project they embark on will distinguish itself by blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination. And naturally, no Yuuta film would be complete without his signature touch—a hint of fantasy.
