They are the first group from the Sakamichi Series, which also includes sister groups Sakurazaka46 (formerly Keyakizaka46), Yoshimotozaka46, and Hinatazaka46. Nogizaka46 was named after the place where the SME Nogizaka Building, which houses Sony Music Japan’s office, is located in. Their producer Yasushi Akimoto also said that the number "46" was chosen as a direct challenge to AKB48. As of 14/01/2026, the group has released 40 singles with 18 different title track center’s or W-center’s, 39 of which having topped the Weekly Oricon Singles Chart, 31 of which having topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100. The group will have also released 5 studio albums as well as 2 compilation albums, with the 5th studio album “My Respect” (2026) set to be released as of the aforementioned date. The group is known for their elegant style of music and dancing, thoughtful lyrics (most of the time) and a more reserved live performance approach as opposed to their sister groups livelier events. Approximately 1 in 30 girls in the country applied for the groups auditions (as opposed to 1 in 60 for both their sister groups Sakurazaka46/Hinatazaka46 each respectively), essentially the record for girl group audition applications made into a single group for Japan. It is said by the Sakurazaka46 (ex-Keyakizaka46, has also choreographed some Hinatazaka46/Nogizaka46 songs) choreographer TAKAHIRO, that the 3 Sakamichi groups all have different worldviews, Keyakizaka46/Sakurazaka46 paints about reality, which is often dark, Hinatazaka46 paints about fantasy which is often joyful, while Nogizaka46 paints about ideals, which is somewhere in the middle of the other 2. This probably best describes the 3 groups in how they perform, and why the members join each group, with the personalities also often matching in terms of the full blown extroverts of Hinatazaka, the quiet introverts who mostly let it out in performances of Sakurazaka, and the reserved mix in the middle of Nogizaka, trying not to be the nail that sticks out in Japanese society (that subsequently gets hammered down), from their performances to how they act across variety programmes and general public image. Additionally, the group hosts multiple variety shows, radio programs, television dramas, and variety youtube videos, with both their flagship variety TV show and variety YouTube channel content being available on their Variety YouTube Channel, both getting frequent updates with English subtitles.
