Kyoto Animation Calls Sparks of Tomorrow Start of a New Era

Kyoto Animation is framing its current original series as more than a seasonal premiere. In a fresh Anime Expo interview published today, producer Satori Senami said Sparks of Tomorrow represents “the beginning of a new era” for the studio—one that balances long-running franchises with wholly new worlds the staff has been quietly building for years.

Director Minoru Ōta, making his series-directing debut after joining the studio’s drawing staff in 2009, described how KyoAni’s informal culture of mentorship prepared him to lead. Veterans coach newer directors on craft and cross-department communication; Ōta says the job is about knowing each creator’s strengths so action, comedy, and quiet character work land with the right hands. The show’s gritty, steam-choked Meiji-era Kyoto—shaped with background artist Takaaki Suzuki of Violet Evergarden fame—is meant to feel lived-in rather than apocalyptic, a world where advanced steam tech coexists with ordinary life.

That original push sits against recent years heavy on sequels and continuations such as Sound! Euphonium, Tsurune, and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Senami stressed that series work still matters, but delivering a new title has been a long-held studio ambition. The project, first floated in 2018 and revived publicly in 2025, now airs in Japan while Netflix carries exclusive worldwide streaming through a partnership with ABC Animation—the same collaborators behind earlier KyoAni hits.

For Ōta, the heart of the production is regeneration: characters who begin in setback and choose sincerity over cynicism. As Sparks of Tomorrow continues its run, the interview reads less like promo polish and more like a mission statement—KyoAni betting its reputation on original storytelling, in-house mentoring, and the kind of carefully composed worlds that made the studio a household name.
