Personal Information

Born in Long Beach, New York, Crystal is the son of Helen (née Gabler), a homemaker, and Jack Crystal, a jazz record producer and executive who owned the Commodore Record store. His family includes his uncle, the musician and songwriter Milt Gabler, as well as his brother Richard Crystal, who works as a television producer. Crystal was raised in a Jewish household he has characterized as large and loving. Following his graduation from Long Beach High School, he enrolled at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, on a baseball scholarship. He had learned the sport from his father, a former pitcher at St. John's University. However, the baseball program was suspended during Crystal's freshman year, preventing him from playing any games. He did not return as a sophomore, choosing instead to remain in New York with his future wife. He later pursued studies at New York University and Nassau Community College. A devoted New York Yankees fan since the 1950s, Crystal's admiration for the team played a significant role in his decision to direct the film 61*. Crystal has been married to Janice Goldfinger since 1970; the couple met when he was 18 and she was 17. Together they have two daughters, actresses Jennifer and Lindsay, and the family is now enjoying their role as grandparents.
