Summary
Trapped by Howl, a fallen star named Calcifer struck a desperate bargain to avoid death. He surrendered Howl’s heart and granted the wizard prolonged life, while Howl gained control over Calcifer’s considerable powers. Though both parties grew to dislike the arrangement, the contract proved unbreakable for those involved. When Sophie Hatter arrived at the moving castle, Calcifer identified the curse placed upon her by the Witch of Waste and sensed her own latent abilities. To secure his own freedom, he proposed lifting Sophie’s curse in exchange for her breaking his pact with Howl.
