Jim Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. He has resided in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, since the mid-1970s. On February 26, 1972, while attempting to assist a friend in moving a stalled truck, he was struck by a passing vehicle. The accident resulted in the loss of both his legs.
