In the world of Daikuuriku, where everyone begins life as female and later selects their gender at age seventeen, the peaceful theocracy of Simulacrum is defended by mystical flying vessels called Simoun. Only girls who have yet to choose their gender can pilot these crafts. The Simoun are armed with a devastating spell known as Ri Maajon, capable of annihilating large enemy forces in a single strike. When the industrial nation of Argentum invades Simulacrum to seize the secrets behind the Simoun, war erupts. This conflict forces the Sibyllae—the priestesses who pilot these aircraft—into an uneven fight. Because of the war, the Sibyllae receive a special privilege: they may delay their gender selection as long as they continue flying. Aaeru, a lively young Sibylla with a mysterious past, and Neviril, the leader of Chor Tempest—the most esteemed Simoun squadron in Simulacrum—must guide their companions through both internal turmoil and aerial battles.
