In the once-peaceful Mikado City, a portal to another dimension suddenly opens, unleashing hostile beings called Neighbors. Conventional weapons prove useless against them, causing massive destruction. However, the Border Defense Agency steps in with advanced technology known as Triggers to drive them back. Four years after the first attack, Border still protects Mikado City, hailed as heroes by the locals. Yuuma Kuga transfers to First Mikado City High School, which is connected to Border, raising suspicion due to the area's history of danger. He soon becomes a target of bullying until Osamu Mikumo, a Border trainee, intervenes despite his own doubts about Yuuma. Their situation escalates when a Neighbor breaks through a newly opened portal in a restricted zone. While Osamu fights the creature with his Trigger, Yuuma easily defeats it. When Osamu asks if Yuuma is with Border, it is revealed that Yuuma is not an agent but actually a Neighbor himself.
