Chika Hanai has always struggled to grasp what romantic love truly means. In high school, she felt uneasy when her boyfriend tried to be physically close, and later attempts at dating set up by her friends never went anywhere. Because she can't seem to understand the unspoken rules of relationships, Chika feels disconnected from those around her and begins to wonder if she is somehow flawed. Seeking answers, Chika moves to Tokyo for college, where a famous psychology professor teaches. By chance, she meets that professor, Shinobu Ishii. Rather than telling her how to be more "normal," Ishii gives Chika the reassurance she has been longing for: that she does not have to experience romantic love at all. As she connects with classmates who share her unusual perspective on affection and follows Professor Ishii's guidance, Chika starts to realize she is not alone in this confusing journey—and that love may not be the answer to everything.
