In Academy City, the abilities of espers are ranked across six levels, from the powerless Level 0 to the extremely potent Level 5. Out of millions of espers, only seven have attained Level 5 status, with Accelerator holding the highest rank among them. The narrative of Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator follows the top-ranked Level 5 esper after he sacrifices a significant portion of his power to protect the cheerful Last Order. While recuperating in the hospital, Accelerator leads a fairly tranquil life until he unexpectedly saves Estelle Rosenthal, a mysterious girl clutching a photograph of Last Order. This event pulls Accelerator into a new confrontation with a sinister group called Disciplinary Action, which aims to exploit Last Order for a dangerous endeavor. With their plan already underway and the organization pursuing the young girl, it falls to the world's strongest esper and his newfound ally to safeguard Last Order and protect Academy City.
