ARISA 〈アリサ〉

Twin sisters Tsubasa Uehara and Arisa Sonoda were separated three years ago when their parents divorced. They kept in touch through secret letters and planned to meet again at their favorite childhood park. Tsubasa, known as the "Demon Princess" at her school, struggles to fit in because of her tomboyish personality. Meanwhile, Arisa is a popular and hardworking class representative with many friends. When Arisa learns about Tsubasa’s jealousy, she suggests Tsubasa take her place at school for one day. After returning, Tsubasa enthusiastically shares how much she enjoyed it, which makes Arisa angry because she realizes her sister still wants her life. Arisa then reveals that Tsubasa does not know the hidden truths about their classmates and herself, before attempting suicide in front of Tsubasa. Determined to find out why her sister is suffering, Tsubasa takes on Arisa’s identity. As Arisa, Tsubasa discovers a strange event called "King Time," which happens every Friday during fourth period and grants one random wish from her classmates. She first dismisses it as a joke, but changes her mind after someone gets hurt. Realizing the "King" will go to any lengths to fulfill wishes, Tsubasa sets out to find the King’s identity and uncover how it connects to her sister’s situation.

Background

Arisa's first volume was placed on the 2011 "Great Graphic Novels for Teens" list by the Young Adult Library Services Association. The manga's second, fifth, and sixth volumes each placed on the New York Times Bestseller list for manga. The series was published in English by Kodansha Comics USA from December 15, 2012 to January 21, 2014, and in German by Carlsen Comics.
