舟を編む

The story centers on the employees of Genbu Shobou, a publishing company. Araki, an experienced editor in the dictionary division, is seeking a replacement as his retirement draws near. After overhearing a discussion between the quiet and reserved salesman Majime Mitsuya and his outgoing, carefree colleague Masashi Nishioka, Araki decides to recruit Majime for his team. The narrative follows Majime and Masashi—two "awkward people"—as they work together to produce a medium-sized Japanese dictionary titled "The Great Passage" (Daitokai).
