The narrative starts in Odawara. Ruka Mami, associated with Sukiya-zukuri, and a girl named Kiyu—whom she took in from beneath an overpass—are visited by a ghost that whispers to them. This encounter brings the ghost's memories back to life. Ruka Mami is a tall, attractive woman who drives an old car and resides in a dilapidated property. She can hear the ghost's whispers and witness its recollections. On a rainy day, everything begins when she picks up Kiyu, a girl seeking shelter from the rain under the overpass near Odawara Station. Later, at the request of Sauropus androgynus, a non-life insurance investigator, Ruka Mami and Rai—who wished to assist with the investigation—agree to look into the matter.
