The Hakone Ekiden is the most prestigious university relay marathon in Japan, reserved for only the finest runners. Haiji Kiyose, a senior, has long dreamed of competing in it but has yet to qualify. To achieve his goal, Haiji must gather nine runners from his rundown dormitory, Chikusei-sou. Kakeru Kurahara, a first-year student seeking a quiet college life, falls into trouble when he mishandles his finances and steals from a convenience store before fleeing. Haiji encounters him during the escape and immediately recognizes Kakeru’s running talent despite his troubled past. After a short chase, Haiji offers Kakeru a place at Chikusei-sou, which Kakeru reluctantly accepts. Chikusei-sou is home to a diverse group of students, each with their own backgrounds and personalities. Kakeru’s arrival completes the roster Haiji needs. Although only Kakeru initially understands Haiji’s ambitions, whether the rest of the dorm will unite behind Haiji’s passion and support his dream of running the Hakone Ekiden remains uncertain.
