In the 13th century, East Asia is consumed by war as Genghis Khan strives to conquer the entire world, with the Tangut people becoming the newest target of the Mongol Empire. The Mongols intend not merely to take land, but to completely wipe out Tangut culture and remove all traces of their existence from history, following the recent downfall of the formidable Tangut warrior known as Shut Hell. In modern-day Japan, Sudou, an easygoing high school student troubled by vivid dreams of the past, encounters a new classmate named Suzuki, who shows an odd interest in him. This meeting triggers a series of events that will drastically change Sudou's life. When Suzuki utters the name "Shut Hell," Sudou's surroundings start to dissolve into darkness. Transported to another era, Sudou wakes up at an abandoned gallows, now occupying the body of Shut Hell. They are soon discovered by Yurul, a boy who resembles Suzuki and shares a complicated history with both the Mongols and Shut Hell. As Yurul explains their intertwined past and the danger they face from the Mongol Empire, Sudou learns that "she" has lost all memories.
