In "We Were There," fifteen-year-old Nanami "Nana" Takahashi begins high school hoping to make plenty of friends, but she finds it difficult to keep up with casual conversation and remember names. One day, Nana encounters the popular Motoharu Yano, who is rumored to have won over two-thirds of the girls at the school. Annoyed by his playful behavior and easygoing attitude, Nana tells him she dislikes him. Unknown to her, Yano's charming demeanor hides deep pain; his ex-girlfriend died in a car accident last summer, and he has not moved on from her loss. The tragedy has also changed his outlook on life and his ability to trust others. Despite Yano pulling away as Nana grows closer, her feelings for him begin to change. Determined to support him, Nana decides to help him heal—or will the task prove too difficult for both of them?
