Set in an eastern realm where an emperor rules, the hougong, or rear palace, houses the consorts and their servants. Maomao, a simple girl from a small village whose father works as an apothecary, never expected her life to become entangled with the rear palace. Yet fate steps in, and she is kidnapped, forced into servitude within its walls. Though outwardly unremarkable, Maomao possesses sharp intelligence, quick thinking, and extensive medical knowledge, which she keeps hidden. Her abilities catch the eye of Jinshi, the astute head eunuch, who recognizes her potential. As Maomao carries out her duties, she uncovers the intricate web of secrets and scandals within the hougong.
