In "Mysterious Girlfriend X," high schooler Akira Tsubaki leads a typical, uneventful existence until the arrival of the strange transfer student Mikoto Urabe. Urabe quickly earns a reputation as an oddball due to her habit of hiding her face behind her hair and her inexplicable outburst of laughter in the middle of class. She remains a loner, frequently choosing to sleep through lessons rather than interact with anyone. One afternoon, Tsubaki notices Urabe asleep at her desk and decides to rouse her. As he leaves, he spots saliva on the desk and, acting on a whim, licks it. A few days later, Tsubaki comes down with a fever, and Urabe visits him at his home. After confirming that he indeed licked her drool, she explains that his sickness stems from lovesickness caused by withdrawal from her saliva. From then on, Urabe begins feeding Tsubaki her drool daily to keep him well, forging a strange yet intimate bond between them.
