Fifteen years ago, Kami abandoned the world, creating a situation where no one can reproduce or truly die, plunging humanity into a major crisis. Gravekeepers are humanity's only hope, as they can bring peace to the "dead"—those who have been revived but slowly rot away. Living in a tiny mountain village, a young girl named Ai leads a happy life as the village's gravekeeper. Her peaceful existence is shattered when Hampnie Hambart, known as the "Man-eating Toy," appears. Ai declares him to be her father. Hampnie then slaughters every villager, leaving Ai traumatized and alone. With no alternatives, Ai decides to accompany Hampnie on his journey. As she grows closer to Hampnie, she begins to discover the real motives behind his horrific deeds, and even her own identity turns out to be far more complicated than she ever imagined.
