Due to ongoing arguments between her parents, Yachiko Togakushi decides to move into a dormitory that has been empty for five years. The building is avoided by most, as rumors claim it is haunted by the Man of the Gaps—a ghost said to observe people through narrow spaces. Disregarding these tales, Yachiko moves in despite a friend's warnings. On her first night, Yachiko meets the Man of the Gaps and discovers his real name is Giko. In his lifetime, Giko was devoted to seeking knowledge, and as a spirit he still pursues the puzzle of comprehending a girl's heart. To record his observations, he is assembling the "Girl Dictionary." With Yachiko's assistance, Giko interacts with many girls, each having unique personalities and circumstances. As the Girl Dictionary nears completion, Yachiko realizes that one deeper riddle remains unanswered: Giko's true identity and origin.
