After a civil war ended, the Northern army used dark magic to transform its soldiers into mighty, monstrous beings called Incarnates. In exchange for immense power that helped them win the conflict, these creatures gave up their humanity. Once the war was over, the Incarnates were met with fear and hostility from the populace, frequently resulting in them being shunned or killed. Years later, Nancy Schaal Bancroft locates the person who killed her Incarnate father. She faces him with an elephant gun, trying to get revenge, but he comes away unharmed. As she pursues vengeance, he is concerned with a recent murder of an Incarnate. During their encounter, it emerges that her father's killer is himself an Incarnate, charged with hunting down others of his kind who have become too monstrous. This mission originates from an old agreement that such beings should be policed by their own. After discovering this, Schaal is asked by the Incarnate Hank to join him on his mission. This gives her a chance to learn the complete truth about her father's death and understand why Incarnates regulate themselves.
