In 1711, a gathering of alchemists aboard the ship Advenna Avis summons a demon to gain immortality. The demon gives them an elixir for eternal life but cautions that the sole method to end their immortality is by consuming one another. Shortly after, one of them begins devouring the others. Recognizing the danger of remaining together, the survivors scatter across the globe. Decades later, in 1930s America, a federal agent battles organized crime during Prohibition, strives to imprison a particularly troublesome terrorist in Alcatraz, and chases a famous pair of thieves. Meanwhile, the transcontinental train called the Flying Pussyfoot leaves a trail of blood as it crosses the country. In 2002, a small group of the original alchemists from the Advenna Avis sets out to find the remaining immortals. However, they encounter a companion they never expected to see again. What initially seem like disconnected events—from a peaceful Italian village in the early 1700s to a modern luxury cruise ship sailing the Pacific—gradually reveal themselves to be deeply intertwined in ways nobody could have predicted.
