But Tsugaru, the wealthy heir to a dry-goods store, suddenly purchases her freedom, though even he cannot fully explain why. Suzu feels immense gratitude for being rescued, yet she cannot understand what motivated him to spend so much. His only reason is that a "bond" connects them. Driven by a need to learn his true motives, Suzu matures from a child into a woman, remaining at his side all the while. This gentle, slowly blooming romance develops against the vivid backdrop of the Meiji period.
