Rakugo, a traditional Japanese storytelling art, demands immense dedication from its performers to reach the esteemed rank of shinuchi. Since childhood, Akane Ousaki has been captivated by her father Tooru's rakugo performances. Secretly watching and imitating his skills through a sliding door, she developed a deep love for the craft. Tooru's journey to becoming a shinuchi was blocked by a critical examination before an audience and a senior master, Isshou Arakawa. Despite delivering a passionate performance, Tooru was expelled from the rakugo school, causing him to abandon the art entirely and take a regular job, which deeply saddened his daughter. Driven by grief and anger, Akane vows to take revenge on the person who undermined her father's talent. She approaches Tooru's former instructor, Shiguma Arakawa, and begs him to become her mentor. However, Shiguma, feeling unworthy to train another disciple after Tooru's unfortunate expulsion six years ago, proposes a test to evaluate Akane's determination. He asks her to perform rakugo in front of an audience as proof of her resolve.

Akane-banashi has been published digitally as an English simulpub through MANGA Plus. The volumes have been published by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint since August 8, 2023. The manga ranked third in the Print Manga category at the eighth Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards in 2022.
