Fifteen-year-old Mikado Ryuugamine relocates to Tokyo's lively and chaotic Ikebukuro area, thrilled about experiencing city life. Previously, his only exposure to urban existence came from discussions in an anonymous online chat room, where he learned of the famed Black Rider—a headless motorcyclist who dispenses justice to criminals. Yet Ikebukuro's strangeness goes beyond that myth. The neighborhood hosts numerous color-coded gangs locked in perpetual strife, but the most mysterious is the Dollars, a clandestine group lacking a defined leader or known membership. As odd factions emerge and the boundary between the supernatural and reality blurs, Mikado gets caught up in Ikebukuro's fabric of myths, falsehoods, and carefully orchestrated chaos, landing in a dangerous setting where he might truly fit in.
