In "Ode to Kirihito," two doctors investigate the mysterious Monmow disease, a condition exclusive to an isolated village that causes grotesque bone deformities and a beast-like appearance before ultimately killing its victims. One doctor, Osanai, is a charismatic and well-liked figure, while the other, Tatsugaura, is an experienced and ambitious researcher. Tatsugaura sends Osanai to the village to study the disease and provide treatment to those afflicted. However, Tatsugaura's hidden objective is to undermine Osanai by deliberately exposing him to the illness, thereby eliminating his rival and securing his own research achievements and elevated status within the medical community.
