On Destiny Islands, Sora, Riku, and Kairi enjoy a peaceful and joyful life. Their curiosity about faraway lands triggers an unexpected chain of events when dark beings called Heartless invade their home. The attack engulfs the island in shadow, separating Sora from Riku and Kairi. As Sora is about to be overwhelmed, a glowing Keyblade appears in his hand, granting him the strength to fight the Heartless. Meanwhile, in the Disney universe, King Mickey Mouse vanishes without a trace, leaving behind a message that he is investigating a grave threat to all worlds. He tasks Donald Duck and Goofy with finding the one who wields a "key," the only hope against the coming catastrophe. Following this instruction, the pair sets out on their quest, beginning in Traverse Town. When Sora awakens in Traverse Town, he finds it also under attack by Heartless. Though his primary wish is to reunite with his friends, his role as the Keyblade's chosen forces him to accept his new purpose: many worlds are in danger, and Sora and the Keyblade stand as the final defense.
